Our churches have offered ceremonies to lesbian and gay couples where we can celebrate, affirm and symbolise our love. These have involved the exchange or promises and rings and a declaration that the couple are united in love before their friends and have received God's blessing.

The
Metropolitan Community Church has been at the forefront of the right for gay
and lesbian people to marry ever since our inception in 1968. Our founder,
the Rev Troy Perry, filed the first lawsuit to recognise gay marriage (in
Los Angeles in 1970) and was one of the couples who won the right to marry
in California a few years ago.
Here
in Manchester we have celebrated over 300 such ceremonies over the
years. Since the advent of Civil Partnerships we have been delighted to
offer a service of blessing after the legal requirements of Civil
Partnerships have been taken care of, and we are happy to continue to do
so.
The
Metropolitan Community Church gave evidence to Parliament in support of
the right for lesbian and gay people to marry and we see Civil
Partnerships as a useful stepping stone on the way to full marriage
equality.
